Horizontal Fencing Pros and Cons

February 19, 2018

There are many fence designs to choose from, in a range of colors, shapes and sizes. One of the more modern approaches to fencing involves mounting the fence posts horizontally instead of vertically. This is a sleek, contemporary design that looks beautiful on some homes, but it is not the right fit for everyone. Let’s explore the pros and cons of horizontal fencing so you can decide if it works for you.

Pro: It’s Modern

If your home is constructed with clean lines and sleek geometry, horizontal fencing may be perfect for you. This contemporary design can update an older home, and it can compliment a home with new construction. If you think vertical fencing looks too traditional, consider this as an alternative.

Con: It’s VERY Modern

The modern nature of horizontal fencing may not be a good fit for every home. If your house has a traditional style, you may be better off with vertical fencing. We can soften the horizontal lines with brick support columns or light wood colors, but at the end of the day, it may not be ideal for your house. One of our fencing experts can help you decide which design will work best for your home.

Pro: Horizontal Lines Emphasize the Size of Your Property

If you want to showcase how long and wide your property is, horizontal fencing is great for that. The posts draw a viewer’s eye around the perimeter, which you can use to your advantage. Set the fencing up so that it points to a focal feature on your property, like a tree or water feature. We will help you plan for that during the design process.

Con: Horizontal Lines De-Emphasize the Height of Your Home

If you have a ranch-style home, horizontal fencing may make your house look shorter than it actually is. This is not as much of a concern with multi-story homes because they have the height to combat the visual dilemma. If you want a fence that will make your home look taller, you’ll be better off with vertical columns that point upward.

Pro: Horizontal Fencing Looks Unique

Horizontal fencing has been around for years, but it’s not something you see every day. If you want something that will make your home stand out in the neighborhood, this is a great fit. Note that if you have a homeowners’ association, you will need to make sure horizontal fencing complies with their rules. We can help you do that before the design process begins.

Con: Horizontal Fencing Requires Skilled Labor

Horizontal fencing is not necessarily more difficult to install than vertical fencing, but it does require special training. The posts and supports are interlocked in a specific manner, so you will need to work with a skilled fence company like All Around Fence, LLC. We have the tools, experience and expertise to build a fence to your specifications.
